The winemaker

The history of Domaine de Lansac

Domaine de Lansac owes its name to the hamlet it occupies at the foot of the Alpilles mountains. It was occupied by the Romans until the end of their empire in 480 AD. It was a strategic point for monitoring the Via Domitia and the traffic that crossed the Durance, as well as for growing vines to supply Roman soldiers with wine.

Then came the Visigoths, while Lansac was still a port, until the Durance changed its course in 1132. The territory was then reconquered by France.

The Sabran family is one of Provence's oldest dynasties. Originally from Languedoc, they settled in the region in the 13th century. In 1204, the Domaine de Lansac belonged to Rostaing de Sabran, following a treaty signed with Guillaume IV de Forcalquier. 30 years later, the owner had to pledge it to the Knights Templar, who converted it into a commandery. After the fall of the Order, Domaine de Lansac passed through several owners, before finally reverting to the de Sabran family in 1816.

Since 1996, it has been managed by Éléonore de Sabran-Pontevès.

The Domaine de Lansac vineyard

The Domaine de Lansac vineyard covers 40 hectares in the heart of Provence, between the Rhône and Alpilles mountains. Established in the hamlet of Lansac, the vines are complemented by 20 hectares of land dedicated to growing cereals.

The vineyard's soil is sandy, loamy and clayey. It lies in a region rich in biodiversity, preserved by the respectful management of Domaine de Lansac, which is today certified organic by the ECOCERT FR-BIO-01 label.

Since taking over the estate, Éléonore de Sabran-Pontevès has developed it by bringing in new grape varieties and working on sophisticated blends that produce wines of character.

The grape varieties are diverse, including the typical Provence varietals: Grenache, Carignan, Alicante, Aubun, Cinsault and Aramon. Other grape varieties include Syrah, Merlot, Marselan, Caladoc, Chardonnay and Sauvignon.

Three-quarters of the vines are at least 40 years old.

Vignes "franches de pied"

Domaine de Lansac is unique in that its vines are free-standing. This means they have not been grafted, unlike almost all the vines, since the phylloxera epidemic at the end of the 19th century. The use of rootstocks, generally of American origin, immunizes the vines against the parasite.

Domaine de Lansac's free-standing vines account for 9 hectares of the estate. To protect them from phylloxera, they are flooded for 40 days each winter. This singularity guarantees the production of original wines.
