The winemaker
Château La Tour de l'Evêque is located in the commune of Pierrefeu in the Var department. A wine estate steeped in history, it was acquired by the Sumeire family in 1958. The Château was once the summer residence of the Bishops of Toulon. History has it that Queen Jeanne, sister of King René, stayed here in the 15th century. The Château's history is strongly linked to its territory and to the history of Provence. The name of the château in which the estate is located, Château de la Tour Saint-Anne, comes from the Chapelle Saint-Anne, once a place of pilgrimage.
The Sumeire family has been established in the region since the 13th century. Initially a merchant, Gabriel Sumeire acquired his first wine estate, La Grande Bastide, in 1922. Since then, the vineyard has grown steadily, and the passion for winegrowing has been passed down from generation to generation. Today, Régine Sumeire has taken up the torch at the head of this wine empire.
Château la Tour de l'Evêque boasts a 78-hectare vineyard that has been certified organic since 2008. The grape varieties planted are typical of the region, with red and rosé wines featuring : Syrah, Mourvèdre, Grenache, Cinsault and Cabernet-Sauvignon; and for whites: Rolle, Sémillon and Ugni-Blanc.
