The winemaker
History
The vineyard is the oldest and fourth largest in the region. The first vines here were identified in the Middle Ages and have been cultivated ever since.
In 1716, the estate became the property of Louis de Selle, then treasurer general of the Navy in Toulon. It was he who had the castle built as we know it today and dug the monumental cellars that are now used to preserve the wine from the vineyard.
In 1829, the estate was sold to a family of "canuts" from Lyon, the Auberts, who prospered in their turn. In 1922, Mr. Frederic Aubert donated the estate to the Church at his death, asking that the building be dedicated to the reception and training of priests. Respecting this wish, the castle became the property of the diocese of Fréjus-Toulon through the Fondation La Castille. The estate thus harmoniously cohabits viticulture and ecclesiastical mission.
Provencal know-how
At the château, a team of experts is at the service of the quality of the vintages and works together to elaborate numerous rosé, white and red wines emblematic of Provence. Aude Lebessou-Faudon, oenologist and cellar master, Jean-Pierre Delpiano, vineyard manager, and Marc Fischer, director of Château La Castille, exalt their inspiration and passion through the elaboration of fresh and sunny wines.
From the vineyard to the glass, Château La Castille honors the human spirit. Each member of the team plays a fundamental role in the conception of the cuvées, allowing them to reinvent themselves each year. Each vintage is unique, which is why it is necessary to get to know it, to make it mature, to get the best out of it and to share the pleasure of tasting it with the customer.
The know-how and the work of the wine have been rewarded several times by stars of the Guide Hachette des vins.
A commitment to sustainable development
In 2019, the estate obtained the HVE (High Environmental Value) level 3 certification. Indeed, the Château proposes an innovative viticulture that respects the environment. No question of using chemical weed killers at the Castille, it is the sheep that take care of cleaning the vines!
The limestone and granite soils typical of the region are worked by hand and by machine in an environmentally friendly way. The work in the vineyards is also carefully done by hand and the phytosanitary treatment is also carried out in an eco-responsible way.
The vines of 25 different grape varieties are naturally irrigated by the surrounding rivers of Gapeau, Jonquière and Réal.
The wines
Château de Castille offers a wide range of elegant, fresh and summery rosés, fruity and gourmet reds as well as lively and aromatic whites. The wines are certified AOP Côtes de Provence and IGP Var and are vinified and elaborated at the domain.
More recently, Castille has decided to completely overhaul its range of wines to focus on 4 main ranges to ensure quality : a PGI Var range named "Sancti", a Côtes de Provence PDO range named "Glorius", the PDO range "Ciel & Terre" and the PGI Var "Lueur d'Azur".
