The winemaker
The Vineyard
The vineyard is located at the foot of the Sainte-Victoire mountain, the Sainte Baume massif and the Aurelian Mountains. Not far from the Mediterranean Sea, the estate is located in a valley where a semi-continental climate reigns, ideal for the cultivation of the vine and the blossoming of grape varieties such as Grenache and Syrah. Château Gassier produces rosé wines of great finesse.
In 1982, the Gassier family bought the property and its vines. Today, it is Georges Gassier, fifth generation winegrower, who runs the estate. He works together with Olivier Souvelain, director of the château since 2010, and oenologist Guillaume Cordonis to produce refined and elegant wines worthy of the great Côtes de Provence. Committed to environmental protection, the vineyard converted in 2016 to organic farming. Working the land and vines in a way that respects nature allows us not to harm biodiversity as well as to find in the wines the expression of a terroir more faithful to nature.
Since 2004, the Sainte-Victoire Mountain is a protected area and labeled Grand site de France. Château Gassier joined in 2015 to offer an educational itinerary with free access in order to promote the exceptional ecosystem of the region and the splendor of its wines.
Terroir and know-how
The vineyard is composed of 40 hectares of vines of which 30% are dedicated to Grenache noir, 30% to Cinsault, 30% to Syrah, 5% to Cabernet Sauvignon, 2% to Rolle and 3% to Ugni blanc. The teams at Château Gassier have studied the soils of the estate at length in order to establish the best terroir-variety combinations. This allowed the vineyard to showcase the 4 distinct terroirs that were identified on the property:
- To the west, sandy loam soils, ideal for Syrah
- To the South, arid and rocky soil for Grenache and Rolle
- To the East, deep and stony soils at the bottom of the slopes for the Cinsault
- To the North, a sandy clay soil, very stony, resting on a layer of sandstone, perfectly suited to Grenache
The wines
Elevae is a cuvée of only 1500 bottles, the result of a blend of Grenache Syrah and Rolle whose berries have been carefully selected. The wine is aged for 24 months, giving it good aging potential. The nose offers notes of vanilla, spices and orange blossom. Subtle aromas of coconut water and melon are also present. It is a very structured wine on the palate with fine tannins that reveal aromas of orange, rose and cinnamon.
Cuvée 946 pays homage to the 946 meters of altitude where the Cross of Provence is located.
The 946 rosé is a delicate blend of Syrah, Grenache, Cinsault, Rolle and Ugni-blanc. The nose reveals notes of peach and subtle aromas of exotic fruits. The tannins melt in the mouth, the attack is powerful and round and reveals aromas of banana and peach.
The white 946 is a blend of Rolle and Ugni blanc. An intense nose with exotic notes of peach, coconut, pineapple and vanilla. A wine that is both warm and fresh, very balanced on the palate that offers a nice length.
