The winemaker
The history of Château de l'Aumerade
The Var region was already wine-growing during the Roman invasion in the first century AD. The tradition continued, with wines of ever-increasing diversity and quality. In the 16th century, when King Henri IV visited the region, he fell in love with the beauty of the place, as much as with its tasty vintages. He commissioned his minister, the Duc de Sully, to take charge of developing the area around Château de l'Aumerade. On February 15, 1594, the first mulberry tree in France was planted. The estate was later adorned with sumptuous plane trees, which still adorn the château's terrace.
In the 18th century, when it was bought by the Aumérat family, the estate took on its definitive name of Château de l'Aumérade. In 1932, the estate was bought by Henri Fabre, one of the founders of Côtes de Provence, as well as one of its first bottlers.
Henri Fabre and his wife Charlotte set about restructuring the vineyard to optimize the quality of its wines. They were rewarded for their hard work when, in 1955, Château de l'Aumerade was awarded the title of Cru classé, of which only 18 owners could boast in Provence.
It was then the turn of their son, Louis, to enter the family business. He focused on marketing and exporting the production. For her part, Charlotte had the idea of magnifying the containers by creating an original bottle in 1956, inspired by Émile Gallé's pâte de verre. She named it Marie-Christine, after her granddaughter.
Today, Marie-Christine Fabre-Grimaldi and her husband Vincent run Château de l'Aumerade with their children, Caroline, Clément and Delphine.
The Château de l'Aumerade vineyard
The Château de l'Aumerade vineyard is located between the Massif des Maures and the Pierrefeu du Var plain. It benefits from the nearby sea and the Mediterranean climate, with generous sunshine and winds that purify the vines, in addition to a clay-limestone soil that pleases the vines.
The vineyard covers 350 hectares of vines in a single block, including 80 hectares classified as Cru Classé since 1955. Most of the vines are devoted to rosé wine, which accounts for 90% of production. Red wines come next, with 7%, and are complemented by 3% white wines.
