The winemaker
The history of Château de Bellet
The Barons de Bellet planted their first vines in the 18th century. Originally from Savoy, this family gave their name to the Bellet appellation. After the Second World War, the Barons de Bellet decided to restructure their vineyard and return to the old, local grape varieties that so enjoy this terroir: Rolle, Braquet and Folle Noire.
The vineyard is established on the highest plots surrounding the old family chapel. This structure, built in tribute to Agnès Roissard de Bellet in 1873, still bears witness to the family's imprint and today serves as a tasting room and boutique for lovers of the estate's fine wines.
The Château de Bellet vineyard
The Château de Bellet vineyard occupies a very special place, between sea and mountains. It covers an area of 13 hectares. Its terroir is nourished by the influences of the sea and benefits from the coolness of its altitude. In this part of France, the south-southwest-facing vines enjoy 300 days of sunshine a year. Alternating alpine and sea winds contribute to the slow ripening process that gives Château de Bellet wines their remarkable elegance.
The vineyards are laid out on terraces, known in the region as restanques. Over the centuries, these terraces have been carved out of pudding. This compact silico-limestone cement is ideal for vines because of the rolled Pliocene pebbles of which it is composed, and which are drained from the Alpine peaks.
The Château de Bellet vineyard is mainly planted with three grape varieties, which are used to blend the estate's organic wines. Rolle, the local appellation of Vermentino, is dedicated to white wine production, while Braquet and Folle Noire are reserved for making red and rosé wines.
Braquet, planted by a very old Nice family, has always been part of Bellet wine blends. As for Folle Noire, it's said to take its name from its moody character! A few vines of Chardonnay and Grenache Noir complete the blend.
The Château de Bellet vineyard is managed with the utmost respect for the terroir and the environment. Gentle methods, based on natural products and manual labor, enable us to produce organically grown wines.
