The winemaker
The history of the winery
The ruins of an ancient Roman mansion and wine vats have been uncovered and bear witness to the long wine-growing history of these lands. Over the centuries, the vineyard belonged to the Abbey of Saint-Victor, then to the Counts of Provence.
The restanques were developed at the end of the Middle Ages to accommodate typically Mediterranean crops: vines, fruit trees, olive trees. The estate includes five buildings built between the 13th and 15th centuries, they surround the water canal which gave its name to the property. Several owners succeeded each other at the head of the estate and it was replanted after the phylloxera crisis. Before its purchase by its current owners in 2007, the vines were exploited for the benefit of the Ott estates.
The estate
This exceptional terroir is composed of marl and limestone, which offers good water regulation on the property. The estate benefits from a microclimate due to the proximity of the Gros Cerveau massif, which protects the land from the sometimes violent rains in the region.
The 15 hectares of vines are spread over 98 terraces supported by dry stone walls, the traditional Provencal restanques, created to retain water and limit erosion. Facing south, the stones also retain heat and then release it.
The property is run according to the principles of organic farming, with manual work preserving the life of the soil. The biodynamics has also been used since 2013 and the vintages have had organic certification since 2018.
A new cellar was built by the current producers, it is backed by the restanques and allows the work to be done in gravity.
The wines
Bandol Rosé vintage 2020 is made from a blend of Mourvèdre, Cinsault and Grenache. The nose is delicate with a complex aromatic bouquet, blending citrus, yellow fruits and brioche nuances. The palate offers a mineral finish with notes of licorice. The cuvée was awarded two stars and the "coup de coeur" designation in the 2022 Hachette guide.
Altum vintage 2016 is an exceptional cuvée from the estate's finest terroirs. It is a deep red wine with aromas of garrigue, red fruits and brioche. It offers a full mouthfeel with a long finish enhanced by mentholated notes. A perfect bottle to enjoy a duck breast, red meat or leg of lamb. The Bettane & Desseauve gave this vintage two stars in its 2020 guide, with a score of 17/20.
