The winemaker
At the age of 13, Emile Bodin, who had lost both parents, was raised by his aunt. At 18, a true self-taught man, he began to renovate the adjoining vineyard, which as everywhere else in France had been devastated by phylloxera. In 1901, with his friend Albert Savon, he used grafted plants brought from Texas, whose roots were resistant to this parasitic aphid. They were thus the precursors of a different, dry and mineral wine, which took full advantage of the richness of the clay and limestone soil of Cassidain, until then renowned for its Muscat. Emile Bodin was the first in Provence to sell his wine in bottles. The "BODIN" brand was then registered and recognized the world over. In 1918, the estate was completed with the acquisition of Château de Fontblanche. An environmentalist in the noblest sense of the word, a botanist, this "mad lover of Cassis" was also a majoral of the Félibrige. He befriended the famous poet Frédéric Mistral, who dedicated his wine to him: "The bee has no sweeter honey, it shines like a limpid diamond, smells of rosemary, heather and myrtle, which cover our hills and dance in the glass". On May 15, 1936, Cassis obtained the protection of the appellation contrôlée, making it one of the oldest, along with Châteauneuf du Pape, Arbois, Monbazillac and Sauternes. After his death in 1969 at the age of 88, his daughter Madeleine, married to Bontoux, naturally continued her father's work. In 1973, his grandson Jean-Jacques undertook the construction of a new, more technically-adapted winery. Today, Nicolas follows in the footsteps of his elders, with the same passion and determination to innovate. The more contemporary lines of his new bottle are a case in point.
