Vignobles de la Coulée de Serrant
(8 customer reviews)
La Coulée de Serrant, an estate in Savennières in the Loire, is today the exclusive property of the Joly family. The vineyard alone constitutes an AOC of only 7 hectares and produces three wines of different appellations: La Coulée Serrant (AOC of the same name, monopoly), Clos de la Bergerie (AOC Savennières-Roche aux Moines) and Les Vieux Clos (AOC Savennières). The winemaker
The history of the estate
Planted in the 12th century (1130) by Cistercian monks in Savennières in the Loire, the Coulée de Serrant has always remained under vine since. The 2017 vintage is thus the 887 th consecutive harvest.
Located between the ruins of the Roche aux Moines fortress, a building that guarded the Loire and where the son of Philippe Auguste defeated Jean Sans Terre in 1214, and the 300-meter-long fortified alley called the "Cimetière des Anglais" (two sites listed in the inventories of historical monuments), this vineyard steeped in history crisscrosses the steep slopes overlooking the Loire.
Celebrated by Louis XI and Louis XIV as producing one of the best white wines in France, the Coulée de Serrant vineyard has never lost its letters of nobility.
The commitments
This excellence, the vineyard owes it above all to its viticulture and vinification methods. For several centuries, the vineyard has been cultivated by hand and on horseback, particularly because of the steepness of its slopes.
Since 1984, the estate has been entirely cultivated according to the biodynamic philosophy. In the cellar, no additional yeast is added, no chaptalization is done, and the wine rests in mostly old wood barrels so that the wine breathes better.
Today, the vineyard covers 15 hectares of single-variety Chenin.
The wines
The prestigious wines of the Coulée de Serrant vineyard require several decantings or a 24-hour opening beforehand. They are best enjoyed around 13/14 degrees.
The Clos de la Coulée de Serrant is a powerful wine balanced by a beautiful depth. On the palate, the attack is fresh and mineral, while supple with a beautiful elegant matter, for a long finish.
Les Vieux Clos is the least precise of the three wines but retains a very nice energy that has a way of getting us in shape while soothing us. It reveals decadent notes of baked apple.
The Clos de la Bergerie features a bitter fatness and twirling earthy flavors. Its solid build gives it a tannic structure.
