Appellation Touraine
The Touraine PDO, between vineyards and châteaux
The 5000 hectares of vines of the Touraine appellation are developed in a royal setting: indeed, the region has the largest concentration of Loire castles!
360 producers cultivate on these lands grape varieties such as gamay, cabernet sauvignon and côt for red wines, sauvignon, chardonnay and chenin for white wines, which incidentally represent more than half of the production.
The Touraine PDO vines enjoy an oceanic climate, so the winters are mild and the summers cool. As for the soils, they are mostly argilo-limestone on the slopes, and gravel is found in the valleys.
Tasting Touraine wines
AOP Touraine Rouge
The red wines of this appellation have a cherry red, even ruby red colour. The nose of the red wines differs according to the main grape variety used. Produced from cabernet, the nose diffuses parfumes of red fruits such as raspberry, but also scents of pepper and liquorice. Coming from Gamay, the nose will be more on red fruits like strawberry and cherry.
On the palate, these wines are light, very fruity, although the cabernet brings more tannins. Touraine red wines will go wonderfully with grilled meats, beef tartar or cheeses such as old mimolette and saint nectaire.
AOP Touraine Rosé
Touraine Rosé wines are dry rosés, and have a pale pink colour. The nose is spicy, and the palate is very fresh and delicate. They make a nice pairing with shrimp, tomato dishes or pizza.AOP Touraine Blanc
These wines have a pale yellow, sometimes golden colour. The nose diffuses floral and fruity scents of honeysuckle, exotic fruits and lemon. There is also a vegetal scent that is close to blackcurrant bud. On the palate, these white wines are mineral, very aromatic and lively.AOP Touraine Blanc goes very well with fish and seafood, but also with asparagus, artichokes or even goat's cheese.
AOP Touraine Fines Bulles
Touraine Fines Bulles are produced as whites and rosés. Their nose is gourmand, with scents of honey, brioche, sometimes green apple. These wines are very fine and fruity, with a measured acidity. Fines Bulles can be enjoyed as an aperitif, or with red fruit desserts.
