The winemaker
The story of Thierry Germain and the Roches Neuves estate
The Roches Neuves estate was created in 1850 in the Saumur region. The chalky subsoil composed of tuffeau is a wonderful terroir for vines, but was hardly exploited until Thierry Germain bought the estate in 1992, when he was just 23 years old.
Originally from Bordeaux, the winemaker decided to take the vineyard back into his own hands, running it organically and biodynamically, to raise it to the top of the appellation's wines. His mission has been accomplished, notably with his Saumur Champigny La Marginale and Saumur Champigny Clos Prieux.
Thierry Germain's humanist vision of winegrowing
Thierry Germain has a humanist vision of viticulture, and does his utmost to handle it gently so as not to stress it. Pruning can even be replaced by a rolling process, to prevent the vine from entering a new leaf cycle that would damage the berries. Respect for nature also includes the use of plough horses to replace motorized equipment. The Thierry Germain vineyard
Thierry Germain's vineyard represents 22 hectares in the Saumur Champigny appellation for red wine and Saumur for white wine. The tuffeau soil is made up of a combination of clay and sandy soils with a predominance of limestone.
The grape varieties are divided between Cabernet Franc for the red wine and Chenin for the white. Red wine is in the majority. The average age of the vines is 35 years. Thierry Germain has built a new winery where the grapes are meticulously sorted by hand, before being transferred to wooden vats. Each of the most prestigious parcels is vinified separately in the winery. The result is highly complex wines with excellent ageing potential.
The wines of Thierry Germain
All Thierry Germain wines are organic.
Thierry Germain - Domaine des Roches Neuves - Cuvée Domaine
Thierry Germain's Cuvée Domaine is a red wine belonging to the Saumur Champigny appellation. This is an opulent, airy and fresh wine. The nose is dominated by red fruits. The palate is long and also very fruity. It finishes with a very slight hint of acidity that lifts the tasting and gives it its originality. Cuvée Domaine de Thierry Germain goes well with poultry in general, and smoked turkey in particular. It also works wonders alongside a hearty winter pot au feu.
Thierry Germain - Clos du Moulin
Cuvée Clos du Moulin is a very fresh white wine. The nose exudes powerful aromas of citrus, exotic fruit, lime blossom and menthol. The palate is equally fruity. The wine is well-balanced, with just the right amount of acidity. It's a delicious accompaniment to your cheese platter, and shows even greater affinity with goat's cheese.
