Appellation Saint-Pourçain

The Saint-Pourçain AOC, the only producer of tressallier

The appellation Saint-Pourçain was obtained in 2009, but vines have been in the region since Gallo-Roman times. The vineyard was maintained by the local religious, but it underwent a reduction in the early 19th century, due to the phylloxera crisis and as the region became more dedicated to growing cereals.

Nevertheless, 600 hectares remain, spread over 19 communes. The main grape varieties of the appellation are chardonnay, pinot noir, gamay, sauvignon, sacy and tressallier, two regional grape varieties, which are considered identical.

Sacy is a white grape variety that brings a nice aromatic concentration. The tressallier is grown only in the AOC Saint-Pourçain, it brings scents of Granny apple and honeysuckle.

The vineyard is planted on plots at a maximum altitude of 300 metres, the climate is continental with some oceanic influences. There are argilo-calcareous, sandy and granitic soils.

Tasting the three colours of Saint-Pourçain

AOC Saint-Pourçain Red

The colour of this red wine is bright, ruby. The nose offers fruity fragrances of cherry and redcurrant, as well as mineral and spicy. There is occasional undergrowth. The palate is agreedly tannic, with a peppery finish. Red Saint-Pourçain can be enjoyed with charcuterie, meats in sauce, raclette or cheeses such as Saint-Nectaire or Maroilles.

AOC Saint-Pourçain Rosé

This wine has a pale pink colour with orange reflections. On the nose, we detect pear, raspberry and white pepper. The palate is round and fruity, and extends the nose with the light taste of pear. This rosé will be very pleasant as an aperitif, with summer salads, or even a tomato pie.

AOC Saint-Pourçain Blanc

The robe is golden, pale, crossed with light green reflections. On the nose, we notice acacia, honeysuckle, peach, and citrus fruits like grapefruit. The palate is fresh, fruity with a good length. Saint-Pourçain Blanc forms a nice match with poached fish or fish in sauce, as well as cheeses such as morbier.
