Appellation Quarts-de-Chaume

An exceptional terroir

Quarts de Chaume is an appellation of the Loire Valley located in the wine region of Anjou-Saumur. To understand its atypical name, one must go back to the Middle Ages: at that time, the local lord reserved a quarter of the harvest and production of the wine. This appellation has always been one of the most prestigious appellations in Anjou, producing high quality sweet wines. In 2014, it was renamed "Quarts-de-Chaume Grand Cru". This AOC produces one of the greatest sweet wines from the Chenin Blanc grape.

The area is located between Beaulieu-sur-Loire and Saint-Aubin-de-Luigné where the vines benefit from a steep south-facing slope. The area benefits from a micro-climate, the vines are protected from the coolest and most humid winds, allowing the perfect over-ripening of the grapes and the appearance of noble rot. The vines also benefit from an exceptional geology: brioverian schist and pudding sandstone.

The AOC has 20 producers and produces about 400 hL annually, or about 53,000 bottles.

Quarts-de-Chaume wines

The Chenin Quarts-de-Chaume has a golden straw colour with a slight grey hue. On the nose, aromas of citrus, peach and cherry mingle with notes of dried fruit and spices. On the palate, they present flavours of ripe stewed fruit and dried fruit. These wines are well-balanced, with a powerful aroma, richness in sugar and freshness. Their complex and round body makes them very elegant wines.

These wines go wonderfully well with foie gras, blue-veined cheeses or fruit tarts. The Quarts de Chaume can be kept for between 5 and 20 years, but the best vintages can be kept for centuries.
