Appellation Muscadet

The Muscadet AOC, a long history with the melon de Bourgogne

The Muscadet appellation covers 81 communes south and east of the city of Nantes. The white wines of the appellation are produced only from the melon de Bourgogne. As its name suggests, this grape variety originated in Burgundy. However, in the 16th century, Muscadet wines were the only ones made from melon.

In the AOC, this grape variety currently covers 1300 hectares, and gives rise to floral and refreshing wines. The vines are subject to a temperate oceanic climate, and get plenty of sunshine in summer, while maintaining cool temperatures that preserve the melon's aromas. The soils are granite or schist.

Tasting the famous Muscadet

.
This white wine offers a beautiful pale yellow coat. Its nose is marked by aromas of white flowers, citrus and white fruits such as pear. There are also mineral notes, and very often saline, iodine notes. On the palate, this wine is very balanced between acidity and roundness. Tasting it immediately provokes a sensation of freshness. If the wines are vinified on lees, they are even fresher, and let discover a more frank roundness.

Muscadet is an unconditional ally of oysters, sea urchins and other seafood. It goes wonderfully with various fish, cooked or raw, and sushi. A pairing to be tested with grilled sardines, just lemony.
