Vallée de la Loire
Domaine Patrick Baudouin
(45 customer reviews)
13 hectares of vines on the beautiful "Anjou noir" terroirs of schist, sandstone and volcanic rock. Savennières, Quarts de Chaume, Anjou rouge de Cabernet, Anjou blanc sec and Layon liquoreux from chenin, organically grown. In the cellar, we work to give birth to wines, not to make them: no yeasting, no chaptalization, and very limited use of sulfur. We offer you terroir-driven wines that can speak to you, in your glass, of their birthplace, wines of great expression and ageing potential. Find out more

The winemaker
The history of the estate
Thirteen hectares of vines on the slopes of Anjou Noir, a winery at the foot of the magnificent cirque of the Princé slopes (a listed site that constitutes "a monumental and emblematic space of Anjou"), here you are immersed in Patrick Baudouin's terroir.
Created around 1920 by Maria and Louis Juby, the estate on the pretty Layon hillsides was left partly fallow in the 1990s when their grandson, Patrick Baudouin, decided to rebuild the vineyard on the basis of the small family winery and the few vines surrounding it.
Today, the 13.5 hectares of vines include ten hectares of Chenin and three and a half hectares of Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon. One hectare of Savennières was planted in 2009.
Commitments
Since 2002, the estate has been converting all its vineyards to organic farming. All new parcels are directly converted if they are not already organic.
Chemical weedkillers were abandoned in 1997, and tillage was resumed. In 2001, synthetic treatment products were banned. Chaptalization was abandoned in 1994, and only a minimum dose of sulfur was added post-malolactic to stabilize the wines.
Terroir
The domaine produces dry, and demi-sec Anjous blancs in Chenin only. Quarts de Chaume Grand Cru and Coteaux du Layon are produced in small quantities by natural concentration on stumps. Finally, Anjou reds and villages are produced from Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon.
The estate likes to follow the philosophy of Roger Dion, a man who is little known in the wine world, not least because he proposes some rather unconventional ideas. According to him, terroir is not as important as it's made out to be in the conception of wines. The success of a vintage depends first and foremost on the people involved: "So the role of the soil in the making of a grand cru hardly goes beyond that of matter in the making of a work of art."
The wines
Les Coteaux d'Ardenay is a "Terroir" wine with complex, deep aromas allied to a fresh, long palate. Its dense, structured structure makes it a perfect match for characterful red meats such as game or flank steak.
The Maria Juby 2003 is an exceptional cuvée in honor of the estate's founding grandmother. This wine offers a very complex nose with aromas of candied citrus and spices. A nectar on the palate with lots of freshness. Elegance and finesse mark this very sunny vintage.
