The winemaker

The history of Domaine Ogereau

For five generations now, the Ogereau family has been growing grapes, with a predilection for Chenin. Their know-how dates back to the end of the 19th century, in the heart of the thousand-year-old vineyards of the Pays de la Loire.

The Chenin

Domaine Ogereau is intimately associated with Chenin, the region's historic grape variety that demands a great deal of care and attention. Each plot produces its own particular grape, expressing Chenin's structure, power and vivacity in different ways.

Thanks to this grape variety, Domaine Ogereau produces exceptional dry wines for ageing, as well as exceptional sweet wines, with the help of noble rot. Fungi and bacteria help the vines to capture water and nutrients. In particular, the Botrytis cinerea fungus forms noble rot, which is harvested and used to make sweet wines.

The Domaine Ogereau vineyard

Domaine Ogereau's vineyards stretch across the Coteaux du Layon and Savennières, on either side of the Loire River. The area's geography is chaotic and its soils highly varied: volcanic rock, sandstone, pudding, shale and Aeolian sand.

The vineyards cover 24 hectares. Chenin accounts for 99% of the white grape varieties, accompanied by 1% Chardonnay. Red wine production uses Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Gamay Noir à jus blanc and Grolleau. The average age of the vines is 40 years. Average production at Domaine Ogereau is 70,000 bottles a year.

Generally speaking, the soils are very stony and shallow. They are dry and arid, benefiting only from rare rainfall. However, the vines benefit from an oceanic climate, with westerly winds bringing humid, salty sea air. These contrasts create the magic of Anjou's gentle climate.

Domaine Ogereau is run as naturally as possible. The neighbor's cows provide the manure used to make biodynamic compost, and the itinerant shepherd's sheep graze the vines in winter. Small animals, such as birds, bats, hares, earthworms and deer, contribute to the ecosystem and the renewal of the land, without being threatened by chemicals.

Pruning, tilling and harvesting are all done by hand. Gentle, traditional winemaking is followed by long ageing to produce wines of the highest quality.
