The winemaker
The Loire Valley has a long history of vine-growing. Muscadet was one of the first regions to be identified as a wine-growing region. It was in this wine-growing landscape that the Girard family launched their epic venture in the 1940s-1950s. Gaston Girard, still a child at the time, saw his mother Gabrielle carrying the business on her shoulders. Indeed, this courageous and ambitious woman lost her husband and Gaston's father on her return from the Second World War. Gaston, the only child, would help his mother as best he could on the farm, which was not yet under vine.
Gabrielle's priority was to provide for her son and herself. Vines were in the minority at the time, less privileged than livestock and cereal crops.
After these troubled times, Gaston, now an adult, married Georgette, a woman from the neighboring commune. It was 1961, and the couple decided to grow the farm together. One of the fateful choices was to give up cattle and cereals to devote themselves to the vineyard. It was their shared passion for wine that led them to concentrate solely on winemaking.
The third generation followed with Patrick Girard, who learned from his parents before they let him go it alone. In 1991, when Gaston retired, Patrick and his wife Martine took over the family estate, and are still the owners today.
They got off to a rocky start with the first vintage, when the harvest froze, but their perseverance enabled them to withstand this dark period. Since then, they've been making top-class wines: matured on lees, the cuvées boast beautiful aromatic elegance and pleasant minerality.
