The winemaker
It was under the influence of Pierre II de Bourbon and Anne de Beaujeu, daughter of Louis XI, that the vineyard was born. It grew thanks to a colony of Auvergnats settled by the Prince de Condé... By 1860, it had grown to 300 hectares.
In 1992, 15 hectares at Riousse were rehabilitated in the form of a SCEA with over 500 shareholders. In 2007, the vineyard was leased to EARL Domaine des Hespérides, managed by Gérard Wastyne, a winegrower for over 30 years.
Since April 2015, the Domaine des Hespérides headquarters and cellar have been transferred to Le VEURDRE. The vineyard is located on the slopes of the Allier valley, and is currently mainly made up of Pinot noir and Chardonnay. A new direction is set, based on the quality brought by the planting of French vines, free-standing and ungrafted.
The proximity of the Allier river ensures the rapid appearance of Grains Nobles at the moment of ripening, giving this clay-sandstone terroir its exceptional typicity.
The First World War marked the beginning of its decline: hybrid grape varieties and land consolidation gave it the final blow.
