The winemaker
The history of Domaine de Montgilet
Domaine de Montgilet lies in the commune of Juigné sur Loire, near the city of Angers, on the site of the famous battle between Crassus and Dumas in 52 BC. This is where the Loire is at its widest, 700 meters from bank to bank, and where the historic port for exporting Anjou wines was founded.
The Domaine de Montgilet vineyard was established in the 1880s. In the early 20th century, it was owned by Victor Lebreton, who died in 1997 at the age of 97. Shortly before, the estate had been taken over by his son, also named Victor. Today, his sons Victor (!) and Vincent manage Domaine de Montgilet.
The Domaine de Montgilet vineyard
The Domaine de Montgilet vineyard covers 42 hectares, of which 28 hectares are dedicated to red wine and 14 hectares to white wine.
The red grape varieties are : Cabernet Franc (44%), Grolleau (30%), Cabernet Sauvignon (18%) and Gamay (8%). White grape varieties are : Abouriou (93%) and Pinot blanc or Klevner (7%).
The average age of the vines is 40 years. Average production at Domaine de Montgilet is 160,000 bottles.
