The winemaker

The Couly-Dutheil hegemony

Located in the heart of the mythical Chinon vineyards, Domaine Couly-Dutheil, the result of the marriage of René Couly and Madeleine Dutheil, resonates as a pledge of quality in the region. It was Baptiste Dutheil, Madeleine's father, who founded the family business in 1921, a century ago. Today, the estate is run by Jacques Couly and his son Arnaud, descendants of the founder, who, out of the 2,000 hectares of Chinon vineyards, vinify 120, 90 of which are direct production.

The company's wines are classified under various AOCs, including Saumur, Chinon, Touraine and Saint Nicolas de Bourgueil. Today, the family owns prestigious plots such as Clos de l'Olive and Clos de L'Écho. The house currently enjoys an excellent reputation, thanks in particular to Arnaud Couly, a young winemaker recognized as one of the most talented and creative winemakers in the Loire Valley. This augurs a bright future for the family and its gourmet cuvées.

A privileged and protected environment

The vineyards of Chinon are ideally situated for growing vines. Indeed, the semi-oceanic nature of its climate means that it benefits from particularly mild temperatures and plenty of sunshine, ideal for growing the estate's main grape varieties: cabernet franc and chenin blanc. What's more, the soil qualities are such that these grape varieties are free to express their own characteristics and develop elegance and personality.

However, this is an ecosystem to be preserved, which is why the Couly-Dutheil family manages its estate according to the principle of lutte raisonnée and respect for the environment. By limiting yields, the vines are able to concentrate their berries and guarantee better-quality wines, while total grassing of the vineyard provides the vines with natural nutrients and enables them to interact with their environment. The ultimate expression of the typicity of Domaine Couly-Dutheil's many terroirs is due to this viticulture that respects its biotope.

Wines that reflect a rich terroir

The wide range of colors offered by the Couly-Dutheil family enables them to seduce the palate of any wine lover. Red, white or rosé, there's something for every taste. The house's red wines regularly win prestigious medals in national and international competitions, thanks to their generous mouthfeel. Fruity aromas, sometimes counterbalanced by hints of spice, ensure perfectly balanced cuvées.

The estate's white cuvées, meanwhile, are striking for their delicacy and the floral and mineral flavors they develop. Lastly, the estate's rosés offer discerning noses light citrus and redcurrant notes that are sure to please.
