Appellation Côte-Roannaise

AOC Côte Roannaise, côteaux and gamay

The Côte Roannaise appellation extends over 14 communes, on the hillsides west of Roanne, between Clermont-Ferrand and Lyon. On 215 hectares, it is the gamay that dominates, planted at altitudes of up to 500 metres.

The vineyard enjoys a temperate climate, marked by mountain influences which give fairly cold winters and cool summers. The soils of the Côte Roannaise are granitic mainly, and the lowest plots experience sandy soils.

The wines of the Côte Roannaise

The reds of the AOC have a cherry colour, with some purple highlights. When the wines are from old vines, the colour is darker. The nose is marked by red fruits, blackcurrant, raspberry, cherry, wild strawberry or even blackberry. Spicy notes are also felt, followed by liquorice. On the palate, these are light, fruity red wines, pleasant to drink. Some wines from old vines or with a longer vatting time will be more full-bodied.

The red Côte Roannaise wines can be enjoyed with cold meats, country pies, poultry or white meats. They also go very well with cantal.

The rosés of the appellation are less widespread than the reds. They have a salmon colour, light and bright. The nose is fruity, notably with apple, pear and exotic fruits. The palate is edgy, fruity and very fresh.

These rosé wines are very pleasant as an aperitif, with a summer salad or grilled meat. With cheeses, we prefer fresh goat's or ewe's cheese, just enhanced by a little pepper.
