The winemaker
Terroir and vineyard characteristics
In the heart of the Loire Valley, in the Anjou-Saumur vineyards, Château du Hureau benefits from sunny hillsides and a geology unique to the vineyard: tuffeau. Tuffeau is a limestone rock that makes up much of the subsoil of the Loire Valley. Tuffeau is also used to build the walls of the Châteaux de la Loire. At Château du Hureai, the old quarries even house the wine cellars.
The wines of Château du Hureau
Château du Hureau produces Saumur Champigny, Saumur Blanc and Coteaux de Saumur appellation wines. Saumur Champigny is the estate's most important production, made from Cabernet Franc. Saumur Champigny wines are light, fruity reds. The 2019 and 2016 vintages are worth tasting. Cuvée Foudre, a Saumur Blanc made from Chenin Blanc, is exceptional. For the past ten years, the estate has been converting to organic farming.
