The winemaker
The history of Château de Villeneuve
It all began in 1577. The house belonged to the de Villeneuve family. It was intended for the eldest son, who was unfortunately killed in battle. The younger son, Jean-Marie Berthelot de Villeneuve, took possession. The château was subsequently renovated in 1967 by the Foucault et Bossoreil family.
In the 1940s, the house was bombed. Winegrowers for three generations, the Chevallier family took over ownership of the estate in 1969. It was they who gave the château its current appearance. The original cellars were restored in 1997, and a brand-new winery was installed in 2016.
The vineyard
Built in the 18th century, the estate has a total of 25 hectares of vines, laid out on predominantly limestone soils. The vineyard rests on a limestone bedrock from which the tuffeau stone used to build the region's châteaux was extracted. Transformed to biodynamic viticulture, the estate produces a delicious dry wine, as well as a range of elegant red wines.
The use of chemical fertilizers is prohibited. However, organic fertilizers in line with the vines' needs can be used after soil analysis on different plots. In this vineyard, every effort is made to achieve a true natural balance in order to produce wines that are respectful of wild flora and fauna.
The wines
At Château de Villeneuve, you can find delicious wines, both red and white. 120,000 bottles are produced every year. And leaves its mark on the minds and taste buds of all wine lovers and enthusiasts. Les Vieilles Vignes remains the most famous. If you're looking for the fruitiness of Cabernet Franc, the fleshiness of Clos de la Bienboire is delicious. For a stronger, more traditional aroma, the Domaine will delight you. We look forward to the wines of 2021 to fully enjoy this pure Chenin.
For over forty years now, Jean-Pierre Chevallier has been the protector of the magnificent Château de Villeneuve. His family have been winegrowers for 3 generations in the commune of Dampierre sur Loire. Planted by grandfather Chevallier, the Vieilles Vignes cuvée has won the hearts of all lovers of great Cabernet Franc.
