Wine Bonnezeaux

The AOC Bonnezeaux produces sweet white wines, made from overripe grapes, botrytised or not. These are wines with remarkable ageing potential. A small appellation of less than 80 hectares, Bonnezeaux is nonetheless a classic of the Loire Valley. Read more on Bonnezeaux

Appellation Bonnezeaux

The Bonnezeaux AOC, producer of a wine that is deserved

The appellation is located in the single commune of Thouarcé, on the left bank of the Loire. It extends over three hillsides, called La Montagne, Beauregard and Fesles. On 80 hectares, it is the chenin that dominates, and which will be harvested in several stages.

Indeed, the sweet white wine produced by the AOC is made by over-ripening. The grapes are thus harvested in several times, by successive selections, in order to harvest only grapes that have reached an optimal level of maturity. It is therefore a precision job to produce Bonnezeaux! This phenomenon of over-ripening is facilitated by the microclimate of the appellation, which is characterised by Mediterranean influences that allow the botrytisation of the grapes. The soils of the AOC are composed of schist of sandstone mainly.

Tasting Bonnezeaux sweet wines

.
Wines that come from botrytised grapes have a golden coat, which becomes coppery with the years. When they are not, the wines have a golden colour with green highlights.

The nose of the appellation's sweet wines is characterised by floral notes of acacia, as well as honeyed notes and others of orange peel. Fruits are revealed in a candied form, notably the quince and apricot, as well as exotic fruits. Finally, scents of caramel and spice develop.

On the palate, the wines still express their complexity, they are powerful, round, opulent, fat but marked by a slight vivacity.

Bonnezeaux wines can be enjoyed with foie gras, cold or fried, blue-veined cheeses such as Fourme d'Ambert, Bleus or Roquefort. A good match would be with a pear, Roquefort and walnut tart, for example. Bonnezeaux is also a good match for pear, apricot or dried fruit desserts. With a galette des rois, it is a pure delight!
