The winemaker

The story of Alexandre Bain

Alexandre Bain was born in Pouilly, of promoter parents with no connection to winegrowing. However, he never forgets his roots in the land, which he owes to his farmer grandfather. It was out of passion that he decided to become a winemaker, and in 2007 set up on land at a place called Boisfleury, which he devoted to viticulture.

The horse back in the vineyard

Alexandre Bain is also a horse lover, and he combines this passion with viticulture. His vines are ploughed by a Percheron draught horse and farmed biodynamically. Harvesting is, of course, done by hand.

The Alexandre Bain estate

Alexandre Bain's vineyard represents 11 hectares, entirely dedicated to a single white grape variety, Sauvignon. It produces an average of 52,000 bottles a year. Every effort is made to produce authentic wines, without harming people, the land or the environment. This excludes the use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides. The Sauvignon grapes are harvested very ripe, and aged with a minimum of sulfur. Alexandre Bain's wines are not yeasted, chaptalized or filtered, to preserve their natural character.

The estate is based in the Pouilly Fumé appellation area. Two types of soil coexist on this terroir. 8 hectares are the legacy of Portlandian limestone dating back 135 million years. The soil is stony, not very arable, but very sunny. It gives roundness to the wines, and Alexandre Bain uses its grapes to make his Pierre Précieuse and Spring cuvées.

The rest of the terroir is Kimmeridgian limestone, marl with small oysters dating back 140 million years. The soil is fatter and more difficult to work. It adds structure, length and finesse to the wine. Alexandre Bain reserves his production for the Mademoiselle M cuvée.

Alexandre Bain's wines

Alexandre Bain's white wines belong to the Pouilly Fumé appellation.

Mademoiselle M Domaine Alexandre Bain

Mademoiselle M is Alexandre Bain's flagship cuvée. It is a highly structured wine vinified without added sulfites. Its color is intense, with a warm glow that presages the nectar's richness. The nose is very rich, with pronounced notes of citrus and exotic fruit. Depending on the vintage, candied fruit aromas are more or less present. The palate is bursting with fruity flavors of mirabelle plum, apple and lychee. The finish includes a few mineral notes. It is full-bodied and particularly long.

Pierre Précieuse Domaine Alexandre Bain

Alexandre Bain's Pierre Précieuse lives up to its name, with a crystalline cuvée that's fruity, complex and fresh. The wine is full-bodied and always perfectly balanced. Its great purity is much appreciated, and it holds up well to ageing. You can also drink it young.
La Pierre Précieuse goes wonderfully well with river fish in a beurre blanc sauce, accompanied by a warm potato salad.
