The winemaker

The story of the Vignerons de Maury

Combative and creative winegrowers At the end of the 19th century, winegrowers in the Languedoc region decided to band together to fight against the wine merchants. The cooperative cellar became the emblem of the village. The first board of directors, made up of 132 winegrowers, voted for the construction of the first building, followed by successive extensions. Vins Doux Naturels de Maury is an appellation dating back to 1936. The Cooperative Society "Les Vignerons de Maury" was created in 1974. In the 80s, the winegrowers decided to sell their brand-new "Maury" bottles directly to supermarkets. From the 90s onwards, these winegrowers, in tune with market trends, offered fruitier, more gourmet wines.

Their initiatives didn't stop there! Aware that Grenache Noir is the region's king grape variety, they convert part of their harvest into red wines. In 2011, this initiative earned them the "Maury Sec" appellation, a still wine extension of the Maury appellation. The winegrowers of Maury are now looking to the future, planting new vines to ensure the renewal of their vineyard.

Verroir and vineyards of the Vignerosn de Maury

Château de Queribus overlooks the Maury vineyards (a 17-kilometer-long natural corridor), protected by the Corbières mountain range to the north and the first foothills of the Pyrenees to the south. Maury wines are made from a complex, uncluttered soil of black schist. The sunny climate and the tramontane, a natural antiseptic for vines, also influence the typicity of Maury wines.

Yes, the men and women of this cooperative are deeply attached to this indomitable nature. The landscape is steep, leaving little room for mechanization. As a result, the work is very demanding, and you really need to be attached to this land to accomplish it and last over time. The strength of the cooperative lies in the pooling of efforts, skills, energies and ideas.

The wines produced by Maury winemakers

At the start, Les Vins Doux Naturels de Maury

To stop fermentation, wine alcohol is added: in this way, the grapes retain their natural sugars, resulting in natural sweet wines. These Vins Doux de Maury (Tuilés or Ambrés) have complex aromas. They are the ideal choice as an aperitif or to accompany the end of a meal. You'll discover notes of pear and flowers in the Maury Blancs; black fruit notes in the intense Maury Grenats.

Then come the "Maury" Version "Sec"

. This is a range of red wines vinified from a single grape variety (Grenache Noir) or from a blend. All you have to do is choose from "Nature de Schiste", "Roches Noires" and "Terra Novo". And let's not forget the cooperative's latest addition: "Maury Sec Cuvée Tradition", made from the terroir's emblematic grape varieties (Grenache Noir and Carignan).
