The winemaker
The Château d'Esclans and its many owners
The history of Château d'Esclans dates back to the days of the Roman Empire. Its location was used as an observation post on the Gulf of Fréjus, aimed at preventing possible naval invasions. The castle's current foundations and cellars were already in existence when it was transferred by the Count of Provence to Gérard Villeneuve in 1201.
It was built in the mid-19th century, inspired by Tuscan villas in Italy. Since then, the château we know today has seen a succession of owners. The first to acquire it were the Ranque brothers. In 1875, it belonged to Joseph Toussaint Caussemille, before being handed over to the Perraud family from 1955 to 1994.
Subsequently, it became the property of a Swedish pension fund before being purchased in 2006 by Sacha Lichine. Originally from Bordeaux, he has created a booming international brand, thriving on Côtes de Provence rosé wines.
Winemaking, behind the scenes
Château d'Esclans and its 267-hectare estate boast a considerable winegrowing heritage. Grenache is the dominant grape variety in the vineyard. It is complemented by Vermentino, Cinsault, Mourvèdre, Merlot, Syrah and Tibouren.
The entire winemaking process at the château reflects a relentless drive for excellence. For Château d'Esclans cuvées, the grapes are harvested by hand. Caves d'Esclans wines are harvested mechanically. The grapes are sorted by hand and optically to retain only the best. They are then transferred to an exchanger to lower the temperature to just 8°.
Pressing produces three different types of juice: free-run juice, heart of press juice and end of press juice. At the end of this phase, a selection is made to decide which juice will be fermented in stainless steel tanks or aged in barrels.
Sacha Lichine and Patrick Léon, his consultant oenologist, take care of the blending of the Château d'Esclans wines themselves, as well as the Whispering Angel from the caves d'Esclans. Bottling takes place at Château d'Esclans.
Sacha Lichine is known as "the visionary who created the brand". Every day, he and his management team strive to introduce the world to "the art of living in Tropezian rosé". That's what makes Château d'Esclans an inescapable benchmark for the great rosés of Provence.
