4
(9 customer reviews)
Roc d'Anglade wines are produced in Langlade, a small Gard commune of just over two thousand inhabitants, renowned for its wines since the 17th century. This wine, which Baudelaire liked to describe as "a song full of light and fraternity", is produced on the seven and a half hectares of the Languedoc Domaine Roc d'Anglade. Find out more

The Sun King and the Roc d'Anglade: the beginning of a story

Although the first references to Roc d'Anglade date back to 936, the story of this great wine really began with Louis XIV. The Sun King had it served to the Court at a dinner party, and was so taken with the beverage that he awarded it the distinction of the Blason Viticole in 1696. By 1870, almost 700 winemakers, coopers and vineyard workers were working on the production of this wine. Unfortunately, the phylloxera crisis (a biting insect similar to aphids) destroyed the vines. It wasn't until 1886 that viticulture returned to normal. The replanting of 200 hectares of vines and the hard work associated with winegrowing enabled Roc d'Anglade to win several awards in the 20th century, including a Gold Medal at the Exposition Universelle in Paris, another in Brussels, and a Silver Medal in London, to mention only the period 1900-1928. Domaine Roc d'Anglade was founded in 1999 by Rémy Pédréno.

The Langlade terroir: an organic terroir

Domaine Roc d'Anglade produces around 36,000 bottles a year from its 9 hectares of vines. The wines offered are red, white and rosé. The soils are clay-siliceous on limestone marl, and experts like to say that this terroir is a cousin of the Burgundy terroir due to the similarity of the soil composition. To preserve this natural environment, Rémy Pédréno has opted for organic farming. For example, grape harvesting and other vineyard operations are carried out by hand. The wines produced by this estate are certified organic. The Vins de Pays du Gard appellation is not accompanied by heavy constraints, so the estate can innovate in terms of know-how.

Characteristics of Roc d'Anglade

Of the total vineyard, 7 hectares will be used to produce red wine and the remaining 2 hectares for white wines. The red grape varieties are Carignan, Mourvèdre, Grenache and Syrah. The white wines are made from Chenin Blanc, Chardonnay and Grenache Blanc. Roc d'Anglade wines are full-bodied, with fine tannins and an undeniable freshness on the palate. The wines have a dense, silky texture.

Putting yourself in the right tasting conditions

To appreciate a Roc d'Anglade at its true value, we recommend decanting it an hour before serving, and offering it at a temperature of between 16 and 18°C. It is ideal with beef, brochettes or lamb chops. It's also ideal with charcuterie and terrines. For cheeses, try a Brique d'Oc, a Saint-Félicien or a Rigotte du Forez.
