Mas Conscience

3.9
(83 customer reviews)
Mas Conscience is located in the heart of the Terrasses du Larzac appellation, between the villages of Montpeyroux and Saint Jean de Fos. Between Pont du Diable and Saint-Guilhem-le-Désert, legend has it that monks used to go from village to village begging for alms. They asked the inhabitants to give according to their conscience. Wine and olive oil were the most common offerings. The monks transported them by mule, in jars made by the potters of Saint-Jean-de-Fos. Over time, these jars came to be known as "conscience" jars. The winemaker

The domain

The vineyard comprises just under 15 hectares of vines, most of which are planted with red grape varieties. Carignan, Grenache, Cinsault, Mourvèdre and Syrah cover 12 hectares. The rest of the estate is planted with white grape varieties such as Grenache Blanc, Viognier, Vermentino and Petit Manseng.

Mas Conscience implements organic viticulture practices. This approach was initiated by the previous owners and is still being developed today. The estate works in the spirit of the region's vineyards, seeking finesse and balance rather than raw power. Today, the estate produces 42,000 bottles.

When they arrived, Geneviève and Laurent Vidal built a new house and state-of-the-art viticultural facilities, including a magnificent cellar in Gard stone, with decorative metal details.

Terroirs

The vineyards stretch over several communes, offering the vines a fine diversity of geological and climatic conditions in which to flourish.

In the commune of Aniane, the vines stretch over a semi-slope with limestone scree, clay-limestone soils and numerous rolled pebbles. On these parcels, Grenache and Syrah are the king grape varieties, with vines averaging 30 years old and Cinsaults 20 years old.

In Puéchabon, the domaine's plots are adjacent to well-known estates. Vines have recently been planted on this lacustrine limestone plateau, alongside very old Cinsault and Vermentino vines that are used to make one of Mas Conscience's signature cuvées, Tapade.

At Saint Jean de Fos, finally, seven hectares of the estate stretch out near the Hérault on a terroir of alluvium and rolled pebbles, with two hectares of white grape varieties and five of red.

The wines

The domaine produces seven well-balanced cuvées, all with finesse. Examples include:

La cuvée l'éveil is made from the oldest and finest vines on its terroir. It is a blend of Cinsault, Grenache and Syrah. It's an elegant, delicate organic wine with aromas of sun-kissed red fruits and hints of sweet spices.

La cuvée l'in is a white wine in the Vin de pays de l'Hérault appellation, expressing all the lightness and richness of its terroir's aromatic palette. Made from plots on the Larzac terraces, this is a fresh, mineral wine. Perfect with grilled fish, seafood platters or Asian dishes.
