Languedoc-Roussillon
Mas Amiel
(82 customer reviews)
Few estates are as emblematic of the Roussillon vineyards as Mas Amiel. With its dry wines, it already ranks among the best in the South of France, but it's above all its natural sweet wines, with their excellent price-pleasure ratio, that put it on the verge of excellence. This old domaine has many nuggets to share with us. All in all, a brilliant introduction to the best of Roussillon. Find out more

The winemaker
The genesis of Mas Amiel
The birth of Mas Amiel is said to have occurred during a card game between engineer Raymond Etienne Amiel and the bishop of Perpignan. Short of ecus, the bishop bet his estate in the heart of the garrigue to continue playing. A losing bet, the land changed hands and the ten hectares of vines on the Goudous estate became Mas Amiel in 1816.
The estate remained in the family until the early 20th century, when Charles Dupuy, a banker from Roussillon, took over the reins. On his return from the war, his son took over, creating the first sweet natural wine to be marketed under the Mas Amiel brand. Throughout the 20th century, the estate grew in size, reaching 226 hectares in 1999, when current owner Olivier Decelle acquired it.
An estate between modern and traidtion
A far cry from the 10 hectares of vines won in the games, Mas Amiel is a titan of the South of France vineyard, a benchmark for many young winemakers. With Olivier Decelle, a new page is turned in the history of the estate.
Hitherto mainly focused on the production of the famous vins doux naturels from Maury, Banyuls and neighboring terroirs, the domaine's range is expanding towards more dry wines, better suited to today's demand. In particular, the new owner has submitted an AOC application for the dry wines of Maury, which was approved in 2011.
A Mas Amiel for every enthusiast
This shift towards more dry wines has not, however, been accompanied by a decline in the quality of vins doux naturels. These, sometimes aged for decades, remain the jewel in the domain's crown, a divine nectar that has stood the test of time - the oldest are over 40 years old, and must be tasted at least once in one's life.
They're one of those flasks for meditation, opened at the end of an evening, to accompany philosophical discussions between good friends, smoking a cigar if need be.
Don't panic though, as Mas Amiel also offers wines for the early evening. The three colors preferred by wine lovers are available in a wide range of styles, from fruity, easy-drinking wines to more powerful, full-bodied samples, as well as naturally sweet wines for dessert or aperitif. It's up to you to choose your favorite Mas Amiel.
