Maison Gérard Bertrand - Clos d'Ora

(1 customer reviews)
Here we are in the heart of the Minervois in an exceptional place: the Clos d'Ora. As one of the few domains cultivated in biodynamic methods, the property favors the preservation of nature but above all, the connection it seems to have with it. 9 hectares of vines on which horses and mules act as tractors between the rows, a cellar that is perfectly in tune with the stars... The winemaker

History

This is probably one of the most touching stories of the Languedoc vineyard. In 1997, Gérard Bertrand (a winemaker and wine entrepreneur) wandered through the Minervois. He liked the region and took advantage of the time he had to discover the vineyards. During his visit, he came across a small plot of land surrounded by stone walls... This one seems mysterious and attracts his curiosity. He feels, when he is walking near this plot, a powerful feeling, as if nature wanted to deliver him a message.

He then rushed to acquire this part of the vineyard, which would be delimited three years later to become the Clos we know today. From the beginning, he established a viticulture that respected the fauna and flora, but also the essence of the place. The latter seems to him very spiritual, as if out of time...

He will go further with the biodynamic culture, setting up the follow-up of the lunar calendar for the works in the vineyard and in the cellar, as well as the works of the ground realized with a horse or a mule. At the time of the acquisition of the vineyard, he was accompanied by an expert by the name of Jean Claude Jacquinet, who very quickly sensed the extraordinary potential of this one...

When Human meets Nature

A potential 9 hectares located at 220 meters above sea level, consisting of marl and limestone soils. The geological fault on which the clos is placed is incomparable, resulting on an equally incredible terroir. The grape varieties were chosen after much reflection on the part of Gérard Bertrand. Wanting to associate the grape varieties with the type of soil that best suited them, he decided to plant mostly Syrah, Grenache, Mourvèdre and Carignan. Grape varieties with great possibilities in terms of winemaking. The Syrah brings its delicate touch, while the Grenache is more powerful. Mourvèdre reveals a more spicy touch, which Carignan accompanies with fruity notes.

It is this taste for perfection that allows Clos d'Ora to be so recognized in the wine world today. Biodynamic viticulture plays a major role in this reputation, as it is practiced down to the smallest detail. Not only in the vineyards but also in the winery where the vat room is under the open sky, watching the stars align to put a little magic into the future wines.

Clos d'Ora is the result of a long journey undertaken by Gérard Bertrand, on the path of biodynamics. A mysterious place where nature intertwines with man, our protagonist has been able to put forward a whole history and a terroir through his different vintages...
