The winemaker

The History of the Modat Estate

Domaine Modat was created in 2007 by Philippe Modat. While he was still a clerk in Paris, the future winemaker became passionate about working the land and the vines. He divided his time between Paris and Roussillon.
During one of his visits, Philippe Modat discovered a terroir unlike any other, at altitude, between land and sea. The site is magnificent, with the scrubland and the vineyard as far as the eye can see. Only the low stone walls and the casots, these ancient shelters of wine growers, attest to the presence of man. In the distance rises the Castle of Queribus, planted on its rocky spur of the Corbières and on the Canigou, the sacred mountain of the Catalans.
The apprentice winegrower succeeds brilliantly in his professional reconversion and transforms his land into a famous vineyard. He raises it to such a level of quality that he can then serenely bequeath to his two sons, Quentin and Louis, a quality wine estate, renowned within the Roussillon vineyard.

The Domaine Modat vineyard

The Domaine Modat vineyard covers 25 hectares all around the commune of Cassagnes, located in the Agly Valley, near Perpignan. The vines are planted on a plateau that culminates at an altitude of between 300 and 400 meters. This high altitude terroir is mainly composed of gneiss, a granitic sand 30 to 40 centimeters thick, resting on fractured granite rock.
The Domaine Modat switched to organic farming in 2007 and has been certified since March 2014. Since 2012, it has been conducted in biodynamics. The goal of the Modat brothers is to intervene as little as possible, in order to let the earth express itself fully. The winemaking is also as natural as possible, with little extraction, if possible on indigenous yeasts, while limiting sulfur inputs as much as possible.
The king of grape varieties in the region is Carignan. It is completed by Syrah and Grenache.
The wines of Domaine Modat belong to the AOP Côtes du Roussillon Villages Caramany.

The wines of Domaine Modat

Domaine Modat - Côtes du Roussillon Blanc de-ci de-là

The white Côtes du Roussillon "de-ci de-là" is typical of southern white wines. Its nose is powerfully floral, expressing aromas of citrus and exotic fruits. Its attack in mouth is frank and acidulous. Its magnificent amplitude delights the taste buds. Its fresh and mineral finish is a typical expression of the gneiss terroir of Domaine Modat.

Domaine Modat Côtes du Roussillon Rouge Bio Le petit ModAmour

The Côtes du Roussillon Le petit ModAmour is extremely rich in fruity flavors, with notably very ripe red fruits. Its mouth is ample, very fresh and slightly spicy.
