The winemaker

Domaine Caujolle-Gazet is located on the southern slopes of the Larzac plateau in the communes of Lauroux and Poujols, north of Lodève in the Hérault department. The soil is composed of clay-limestone scree, with a high stony content. The area is under the dual influence of the Mediterranean and the first major reliefs on the southern edge of the Massif Central, resulting in a highly contrasting but relatively cold and humid climate, conducive to a strong expression of finesse in the wines. The soils, although very stony, are nevertheless very fertile, thanks to high rainfall: The vines thrive in these exceptional conditions, without the often destructive jolts of the Mediterranean climate. Located beneath the Larzac scree, the estate's plots are marked by steep slopes with north or northeast exposure, which limits the risk of extreme temperatures. The estate's vineyard is small (5 ha). This area is likely to grow slightly (up to 6 ha). The red grape varieties are eclectic, to say the least: Carignan, Grenache noir, Merlot, Pinot noir and Syrah. Grafting carried out in spring 2011 will produce Chardonnay and Grenache blanc by 2012.
