The winemaker
The history of the Coume Del Mas estate
The first vintage of Domaine Coume Del Mas was created in 2001 by Nathalie and Philippe Gard, an agronomist specializing in terroirs. After studying in Montpellier and gaining experience in Burgundy and Bordeaux, Philippe created Coume Del Mas on schist soil and decided to work this sloping terroir where no mechanization is possible.
The couple built up the estate with the acquisition of plots in the communes of Banyuls sur Mer and Collioure, in order to work on the elaboration of these two queen of Roussillon appellations.
Today, Nathalie and Philippe Gard cultivate 14 hectares of vines, divided into 32 parcels. The estate is located in the hamlet of Cosprons, between Banyuls sur Mer and Port Vendres.
The Coume Del Mas estate vineyard
The vineyards of Domaine Coume Del Mas differ greatly from those perched at an altitude of 380 meters and those plunging into the Mediterranean. These vertiginous slopes require entirely manual cultivation, as mechanization is made impossible by the steep inclines.
As a result, the Coume Del Mas estate is run with respect for the terroir and nature, using sustainable farming methods. It produces an average of 35,000 bottles a year. Two-thirds of the vines are red and the rest white. The average age of the vines is 30 years.
The grape varieties for the red wine are 60% Grenache Noir, 15% Mourvèdre, 15% Carignan and 10% Syrah. The grape varieties for the white wine are 85% Grenache Gris, 5% Roussanne, 5% Vermentino and 5% Grenache Blanc.
