Appellation Côtes-du-Roussillon-Villages

Presentation of the appellation and its terroir

The Côtes-du-Roussillon Villages appellation is located in the Roussillon wine region and covers 51 communes located in the north of the Pyérénées Orientales. This area has a surface of 1756 hectares of vines, limited to the North by the department of Aude, to the East by the pond of Salses, to the West by Les Fenouillères and to the South by the Tech.

The production of the Côtes-du-Roussillon-Village appellation amounts to approximately 50075 hectolitres per year (in 2019) and its yield is 28.5 hectolitres per year. The vineyards are located between 100 and 400 metres above sea level and the soils are composed of granite, gneiss, schist or limestone.

The diversity of soils allows four communes in the region, Caramany, Lesquerdres, Latour-de-France and Tautavel, to add their names to the appellation villages to specify the appellation and the terroir. The wines of these Côtes-du-Roussillon Villages produce wines that are just as full-bodied as the Côtes-du-Roussillon, from the same grape varieties, but the production constraints are more demanding. There are therefore 4 specific productions that can be found on the label: Côtes du Roussillon Villages "Caramany", Côtes du Roussillon Villages "Lesquerde", Côtes du Rousillon Villages "Latour de France", and Côtes du Rousillon Villages "Tautavel".

The wines of the appellation

The appellation produces wines from the following grape varieties: Grenache, Carignan, Syrah, Mourvèdre and Lledoner.

Côtes-du-Roussillon-Villages wines are powerful, complex and full of character. They have a deep red colour and the nose evokes subtle notes of grilled fruit and vanilla. On the palate, these wines are unctuous, accompanied by delicate and harmonious tannins. They are generally enjoyed with game or beef. Translated with www.DeepL.com/Translator (free version)
