The winemaker
The name of Mougères in Romance language, means "land where rock roses grow." The Mougères sanctuary is built on an ancient Roman villa where the grapes were grown. The remains of Roman pottery and amphorae found in the floor and walls attest. In 1328, the consuls of Caux called the Dominican Fathers to establish a convent in Mougères. In 1490, the monastery was abandoned Mougères. It is only in 1645 that the faithful of the surrounding villages, rebuild a new church. This is the current church of Our Lady of Mercy. In 1789, in turmoil, the monastery is closed. A pious lady of Pézenas, Mrs Maury, bought the property to save it. In his will, it forces the heirs to Mougères the first monks dressed in white who would return to France after the storm. On 4 May 1825 the Carthusian monks took possession. They will leave the scene in 1901 only to return in 1935 and re-implant the vine. The Carthusians will exploit the field until 1977. During this period, they will plant quality grape varieties, the wine will make the domain fame. They also opened a wine shop to individuals where they sell the estate's wines in bottle. The area is now administered by the Lycée Agricole Private Catholic Bonne Terre Pezenas see website Mr. De Saint Exupéry and his team is working on the field, so you can taste and appreciate wine Chartreuse Mougères. The Carthusian Fathers still own the domain.
