Appellation Blanquette-de-Limoux

Blanquette-de-Limoux, perhaps the oldest effervescent in the world

The Blanquette-de-Limoux appellation is named after the sparkling wine produced in 41 communes in the Aude department, north of the Pyrenees. The phenomenon of bubbles forming in a wine was first noticed in Limoux in 1531, by the monks of Saint-Hilaire Abbey. This makes it the oldest effervescent in the world.

The AOC has 1420 hectares of vines, planted with chenin, mauzac or chardonnay. The vines enjoy a temperate climate, with some nuances depending on the terroir: colder in the higher valleys, milder as you get closer to the sea. The soils of the AOC are mostly argilo-calcareous and stony.

Tasting of Blanquette-de-Limoux

This effervescent offers a pale yellow coat, crossed by golden highlights and fine bubbles. The nose is fresh, with parfumes of Granny apple and white flowers such as acacia and hawthorn. After a few years, Blanquette-de-Limoux can release scents of ripe fruit and honey. On the palate, it is a true extension of the nose, with fruity and floral notes, sometimes slightly toasted.

Blanquette-de-Limoux is ideal as an aperitif, or with desserts, including a galette des rois, an apple crumble or a pear tart.
