The winemaker

The history of Champagne Philipponnat and its terroir

The Philipponnat family has been working the Champagne soil for five centuries. The lands of Aÿ were the cradle of the family as early as 1522, with Apvril le Philipponnat, the first owner of vines at "Le Léon", between Aÿ and Dizy.

His descendants went on to become winemakers and merchants. Today, Champagne Philipponnat still uses the 18th-century cellars of the Château de Mareuil. The house has also expanded, with the acquisition of Clos des Goisses, a very special Champagne hillside.

In Champagne, "gois" means "sloping". The 5.5-hectare Clos des Goisses has a 45° slope. It's the warmest terroir in the region: south-facing, it's never shaded, and its vines take advantage of the chalky soil to produce exceptional grapes.

The Champagne Philipponnat estate covers the communes of Aÿ, Avenay-Val-d'Or, Mareuil-sur-Aÿ and Mutigny.

Respect for vines and traditions in the cultivation of Champagne Philipponnat grapes

The ancestral terroirs of Champagne Philipponnat are treated with the utmost deference. Soils are worked naturally, with hand weeding and ploughing carried out by draught horses.

The solera principle

Philipponnat Champagnes have adopted the principle of solera sous bois. Under this principle, reserve wines are kept in oak barrels before being added to the non-vintage blend. The proportion is one-quarter to one-third. This blend serves as the reserve wine for the next blend.

The aim of this process is to preserve in each bottle the trace of the vintages blended since the beginning. This know-how is handed down from generation to generation.

Philipponnat Champagnes

The grapes used to make Champagne Philipponnat are mostly from Premiers and Grands Crus. They are harvested at full maturity to take full advantage of their aromatic richness.

Royale Réserve

Champagne Philipponnat's Royale Réserve cuvée is available in brut, non-dosé and rosé. It is made with a majority of Pinot Noir grapes from Premiers and Grands Crus. Royale Réserve champagnes are complex, always fresh, with an original mineral note.

Vintage

The Vintages of Philipponnat Champagnes have elegant vinosity in common. They are available in Blanc de Noirs, Grand Blanc and Sublime Réserve Sec.

Cuvée 1522

Cuvée 1522 commemorates the birth year of Champagnes Philipponnat. Plain or rosé, the cuvée is made from Grands Crus only, and is vinified in wood. This is our most accomplished cuvée. It is complex, but always balanced.

Le clos des Goisses

The steepest, sunniest clos deserves its own cuvée. This is a unique wine, fresh and round, for a cuvée of great prestige.
