The winemaker
House history
Its history began as early as 1640, when the Henriot family moved from Lorraine to Reims in the Champagne region. Very active in the wine trade, they quickly familiarized themselves with the region and established a small vineyard. Over the years, this vineyard grew in size, and many generations of the family succeeded one another, always with the same desire to make quality wines.
The real boom came in 1808, when an unfortunate event occurred: a Nicolas Henriot died. Apolline, the winegrower's widow, took over the family estate and founded the Maison Henriot. With her sharp business sense, she enabled the House to shine and prosper, appearing on the finest tables in France and Europe.
A few decades later, in 1880, a marriage between Paul Henriot and Marie Marguet extended the vineyard. In fact, Marie Marguet brought with her some fine plots of Chardonnay, adding to the Henriot family vineyard. These vines, coming from the Côte des Blancs, led the estate to focus on a new style of wine: Blanc de Blancs.
The end of the 19th century marked a turning point for the vineyard, which was unfortunately not spared by Phylloxera and the First World War in the 20th century. But by 1926, Etienne Henriot (an agricultural engineer), was at the helm of the company and expanded it considerably, reaching a surface area of 110 hectares.
As quality is as important as ever, only the very best vintages are selected. In 1957, Joseph Henriot, son of Etienne Henriot, took over the company. The company grew in stature, acquiring such estates as Bouchard Père & Fils, William Fèvre (Burgundy) and Villa Ponciago (Beaujolais).
A unique property
An independent, family-run estate for over 200 years now, it boasts 35 hectares of vines. Rigorously selected, these parcels are located on terroirs producing the best grapes: Mareuil and Ay in Grand Cru, Avenay and Épernay in Premier Cru...
But more than a terroir, it's a unique know-how, nurtured by 8 generations of winemakers with a passion for wine. Today, Alice Tétienne, the cellar master, with the help of the whole team, maintains the domaine's vocation: the constant quest for quality.
To achieve this, fabulous Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier and Chardonnay grapes shine in the vinifications... It is above all the latter, Chardonnay, that seems to be the backbone of the estate's wines. As the estate itself says, its Blanc de Blancs is its most personal and emblematic cuvée.
