The winemaker
Charles-Camille Heidsieck
This now-famous figure was born in 1822 in Reims. He comes from a winegrowing family that goes back to Florens-Louis Heidsieck, who founded "Heidsieck & Co" in 1785 with three of his nephews. Christian Heidsieck stands out from the crowd and gives life to Piper-Heidsieck. Charles-Camille began his career at Piper-Heidsieck. But in 1851, he decided to create his own Champagne house and gave it his name.
His aim was always to conquer the foreign market. He began in Europe with Belgium and England, then moved on to the United States. Americans soon dubbed him "Champagne Charlie". This man was an optimist and a visionary. He put everything into his cellars, concentrating on the selection, blending and ageing of his wines.
All this in order to produce better-quality champagnes while buying grapes from individual growers. By the time of his death in 1893, his Champagne House had become one of Champagne's leading producers.
The cellars
For Charles Heidsieck, the success of the champagne industry depends above all on its cellars and less on its vineyards. That's why, in 1867, he decided to acquire several old chalk quarries dating back to Gallo-Roman times. From there, he created optimal conditions for maturing his wines. The chalk quarries are still used to age the House's champagnes. The chalk quarries have even been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2015.
The House of Charles Heidsieck
Until 1976, the house was managed by Charles' descendants. In that year, it merged with Champagne Henriot. In 1985, it joined the Rémy Martin group, now known as Rémy Cointreau. From then on, the house underwent a veritable transformation.
The non-vintage brut was reinvented as a complex champagne with a high percentage of reserve wines. To build up the necessary reserve stocks, the house reduced its sales volume and positioned Charles Heidsieck as a high-end, prestigious brand. It was sold to the EPI group, founded by Christopher Descours, in 2011.
The history of this house has grown over more than a century and now figures as a Champagne "star". It sells just under a million bottles a year, but remains three times the production of five years ago. Since 2014, the House has been developing its sales to restaurateurs, sommeliers and all wine lovers.
