Champagne Besserat de Bellefon

4.8
(5 customer reviews)
Maison Besserat de Bellefon was founded in 1843 in Aÿ by Fernand Besserat. This majestic champagne has the particularity of being a "gastronomic" champagne. Indeed, the different qualities of the famous Cuvée des Moines are designed to accompany an entire meal. As a result, it is distributed mainly through wine merchants, in top hotels and in Michelin-starred restaurants. Champagne Besserat de Bellefon is also renowned for its distinctive bubbles. These are 30% finer than traditional champagne. Find out more

The winemaker

The history of Champagne Besserat de Bellefon

The story begins in 1843, when Fernand Besserat decided to found his Champagne house. In 1920, his grandson married Yvonne Méric de Bellefon. It was this union that gave the house its current name, Besserat de Bellefon. But it would be another ten years before the house really took off. Here's a little anecdote about the major turning point for this champagne house.

"The manager of a famous Parisian restaurant, La

The vineyard

Maison Besserat de Bellefon has a 25-hectare vineyard, located in the Marne Valley, the cradle of Pinot Meunier. On some labels, you can read "Négociant-Manipulant", which means that some of the grapes are bought from a network of winegrowers to be vinified with those from the estate. "Particular care is taken in the blending process, which is seen as an art with the winemaker as artist."

To preserve all the purity and freshness of the wine, Maison Besserat de Bellefon does not practice malolactic fermentation. This is what makes Cuvée des Moines so special: silky mousse and bubbles of rare finesse.

The wines

The famous Cuvée des Moines is available in several wines:

Brut: composed of 35% Chardonnay, 20% Pinot Noir and 45% Pinot Meunier.

Rosé: the first rosé champagne with such light effervescence

Blanc de Blancs: made for the first time in 1999, it is 100% Chardonnay.

Extra Brut: the latest quality of the Cuvée des Moines released in 2009.

Millésimé: This prestigious cuvée had its first vintage in 2007.

Then there's cuvée BdeB. A cuvée specially designed for the 170th anniversary of Maison Besserat de Bellefon.

Maison de Besserat de Bellefon was acquired by Maison Burtin (Champagne Lanson), itself absorbed in 2006 by the Boizel Chanoine Champagne group (BCC). Current stock stands at 4 million bottles, 15% of which are vintage.
