Appellation Saint-Romain
The Saint-Romain AOC, in Côte de Beaune
Saint-Romain is a Villages appellation in the Côte de Beaune. The production area corresponds to the commune of Saint-Romain and its surroundings, representing 110 hectares. The AOC also has several lieux-dits, which may appear on the bottle label, such as Le Marsain, Sous la Velle or Combe Mazin.
The pinot noir and chardonnay are, as elsewhere in Burgundy, the grape varieties grown in the appellation. The vineyard is subject to a temperate oceanic climate, the plots are relatively high in altitude, up to 450 metres. For the soils, we find marl, limestone and finally some clay ideal for chardonnay.
Taste the reds and whites of Saint-Romain
The red wines of the AOC offer a dark ruby colour, even cherry. On the nose, one recognises red fruits such as raspberry, redcurrant and morello cherry. After a few years of cellaring, the nose offers scents of ripe fruit and spice, accompanied by smoky notes. The palate offers elegant and fine tannins.
Red Saint-Romains go perfectly with white meats, poultry in sauce and soft, bloomy-rind cheeses such as brillat-savarin.
In white, the Saint-Romain wines have a typical Chardonnay colour, golden with some greenish reflections. The nose declines scents of white flowers, with lime or acacia. A beautiful minerality is already noticeable. After a few years, the nose diffuses fragrances of ripe yellow fruits, with quince and mirabelle plum. On the palate, the minerality is confirmed, time will offer more roundness.
This white is ideal with fish, cooked simply, just grilled or steamed. It can also be paired with a blanquette of veal or omelettes.
