The winemaker

The history of Maison Nicolas Potel

Viticulture in Burgundy dates back to the first century AD, under the Roman Empire. The tradition was then perpetuated, notably by the Cistercian monks who contributed to the renown of Burgundy wine by producing the wines of the local aristocracy.

Nicolas Potel comes from a family of Burgundy winegrowers. The family estate, Domaine de la Pousse d'Or, was located in Volnay. In 1997, when Nicolas Potel's father passed away, the estate was sold and Nicolas went into the wine trade.

In 2006, he founded his own domaine with the purchase of vineyards extending over the Côte de Beaune, as well as the Côte de Nuits. From an initial 13 hectares, the gradual acquisition of new vines enabled Maison Nicolas Potel to expand to 22 hectares, divided between Vosne Romanée and Santenay.

Since then, Maison Nicolas Potel has acquired modern, high-performance production facilities, including former warehouses at the Nuits-Saint-Georges railway station. It has also forged partnerships with the region's finest winemakers to enrich its negoce catalog.

In 2004, Maison Nicolas Potel came under the control of Maison Labouré-Roi. It is renowned the world over, enabling it to export part of its production.

The Maison Nicolas Potel vineyard

In keeping with Burgundian tradition, the main grape varieties are Pinot Noir, the source of the great red wines, and Chardonnay, from which the great white Burgundies are made.

The vineyards of Maison Nicolas Potel are managed with the greatest respect for the environment, with as little intervention as possible and, wherever possible, without the use of chemicals.

Vinification work is also kept to a minimum, to allow each grape variety to express itself. Vinification adapts to the vintage, not the other way around. Sulfite is added sparingly, with the aim of preserving the identity of each terroir.
