The winemaker

The history of the estate

Maison Joseph Drouhin has been a family-run estate for 140 years. Today, the fourth generation holds the reins, as respectful of nature and terroir as ever, constantly striving for perfection.

Joseph Drouhin, a native of the Chablis region, founded the company in Beaune at the age of 22. He was succeeded by his son Maurice, who expanded the estate by purchasing new plots. From 1957 onwards, Robert Drouhin gave the estate its current dimension, making his mark as one of the first Burgundians to adopt integrated viticulture. Their descendants carry on the tradition and precision work that characterize the estate's vineyards.

Today, Joseph Drouhin's four great-grandchildren run the estate. With each vintage, they perpetuate the family tradition and continue to innovate.

A vineyard of excellence

Comprising 80 hectares of vines and nearly 90 appellations, Domaine Joseph Drouhin is one of the largest in the region.

For several years now, the family has decided to adopt organic and biodynamic agriculture, in order to obtain the right expression from each territory. The soils are respected and perpetuated, notably through horse-drawn ploughing, grassing and natural composting. Harvesting is done by hand and in small crates to preserve the full potential of the berries.

Deep rooting and high planting density are also recommended so that the vines receive the best messages from the terroir in which they are planted. Yields are deliberately low, and the grapes are free to express the nuances of each terroir.

The wines

The Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Amoureuses is a single-varietal Pinot Noir. Its color ranges from ruby to cherry, offering a seductive aromatic palette of red fruit and woody notes with hints of truffle and mushroom. The palate is silky with noble tannins.

The Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru is a single-varietal Pinot Noir. Its color is an intense ruby red and its aromas are powerful and refined. Dark cherry and bitter chocolate are recognizable, with hints of undergrowth, truffle and licorice. On the palate, the tannic structure is powerful and velvety, revealing perfect balance.
