The winemaker

The history of Maison Chanzy

Maison Chanzy will soon be celebrating its 50th anniversary! Indeed, it was founded by Daniel Chanzy in 1974 in Bouzeron, in the northern part of the Côte Chalonnaise. He envisioned Côte Chalonnaise wines that would rival the greatness of the Côte d'Or, and insisted on planting vines there. Vintage after vintage, he proved that he was on the right track, working conscientiously to bring certain appellations to the fore. His passion for wine drove him to always do more and better, and this enabled him to make a name for himself on the Burgundy scene. 40 years later, in 2012 to be exact, Jean-Baptiste Jessiaume is the estate's new director. He marked a turning point for the estate, winning the Côte de Beaune Young Winemaker of the Year award in the same vintage. Dedicated to conveying emotion and revealing the full potential of his terroir through his cuvées, he was rewarded with prizes in various competitions, including the Concours des Grands Vins de France and the Guide Hachette. An enthusiast of new oak, he never hesitates to invest in new barrels to give himself the best chance of producing great wines. Every year, no fewer than 250,000 bottles of all cuvées leave the cellar. In 2020, Max Blondelle (an experienced cellar master) joins the team and hopes to add his own touch.

Terroir and characteristics of Maison Chanzy wines

If there's one notion that can characterize Maison Chanzy, it's its commitment. To quality, of course, but not only... A true standard-bearer, it is one of the leading producers on the Côte Chalonnaise, with operations in Bouzeron, Rully, Givry and Mercurey. In fact, the 16th-century winery is located in the village of Bouzeron, facing 16 hectares of vines, including the Clos de la Fortune monopole, a keystone for the company. In the Côte d'Or region, the company has also invested in several parcels, which it proudly displays in its catalog: Puligny-Montrachet and Vosne Romanée. Its commitment to the vineyard is total, with level 3 Haute Valeur Environnementale certification to be obtained in 2021. Specifically, the vineyard is cultivated without herbicides or pesticides. We prefer to use organic fertilizers and moderate ploughing, only when necessary to respect the life of the soil. It's a meticulous approach that demonstrates the estate's commitment to preserving biodiversity and the ecosystem. It's also a quest for authenticity. This work continues during vinification in a delicate and thoughtful way. The winemakers want to tell a story, revealing all the subtleties of the terroir and the character of each micro-climate. The expression of this character will be sublimated during the ageing process, which follows the pure Burgundian tradition of using barrels...
