The winemaker

The history of Domaine Jean-Marc Brocard

Jean-Marc Brocard inherited all his knowledge of vines and their cultivation, as well as wine-making, from winemaker Louis Petit. During his years of apprenticeship at his side, he applied his main teaching: "Watch, shut up, learn".
Jean-Marc Brocard was born in 1946 in Chaudenay le Château, Côte d'Or. At the end of the 60s, his farmer father warned him that farming was no longer sufficiently profitable to make a living and, above all, to support a family. That's why Jean-Marc Brocard took a BTS in engineering and became an engineer in Auxerre.
Meeting his future wife turned his career around. His future in-laws worked in the wine industry in Saint Bris le Vineux, Yonne, and introduced him to this passion. When his first child, Julien, was born in 1973, Jean-Marc Brocard moved to Préhy, still in the Yonne, in the heart of the Chablis vineyards, and planted his first vines. The Jean-Marc Brocard estate was born.
Julien, who also studied engineering, joined his parents in the domaine in 1995. With a keen interest in biodynamic viticulture, he began applying ancestral methods that respect the preservation of nature to part of the estate in 1997. Today, Domaine Jean-Marc Brocard is one of the largest organic vineyards in the Chablis region.

The Jean-Marc Brocard estate vineyard

Domaine Jean-Marc Brocard covers 144 hectares. The white grape varieties are almost totally planted, representing 139 hectares, leaving only 5 hectares for red wine. The average age of the vines is 40 years. The estate produces an average of 900,000 bottles a year.
60 hectares of the Jean-Marc Brocard estate are certified in Agriculture Biologique and 40 hectares in Biodynamie.
Everything is done to respect the terroir, as well as the natural calendar of the seasons. Inputs are made from natural substances, to proscribe all chemical components harmful to the environment.
