The winemaker

Born in May 1969, in one of the world's most beautiful wine-growing regions, Frédéric Magnien represents the 5th generation of winegrowers in the Magnien family. While helping his father in the vineyard and cellar, he studied at the Lycée viticole de Beaune. In order to gain experience with other winemakers, he began harvesting in 1986 with Jean-Noël Gagnard in Chassagne-Montrachet. He then joined the Michel Magnien domaine in Morey-Saint-Denis, working alongside his father from 1987 to 1991. Keen to deepen his knowledge, he left in 1992 to work abroad. He began with 4 months in California, USA, working for Josh Jemsen at the Calera estate. He then spent 6 months in Australia with Garry Farr at Bannockburn Vineyard. In September 1995, he made one of the most important decisions of his life, creating a Maison de Négoce in his own name: FREDERIC MAGNIEN. The aim is to differentiate between the winegrower and winemaker professions: as he doesn't own any vines, Frédéric Magnien plays an essential role in advising the winegrowers with whom he works throughout the year, enabling him to select plots mainly of old vines (over 40 years old) and to buy grapes of the highest quality, at optimum ripeness, from the noblest appellations of the Côte de Nuits. Returning for the harvest in 1993, he enrolled at Dijon University, graduating with a degree in oenology. This enabled him to explore the aromatic diversity of Côte de Nuits terroirs, using the same vinification, barrels and ageing methods, while continuing the winemaker's passion. The Maison Frédéric Magnien thus began in 1995 with 21 barrels spread over 5 appellations, and today boasts around 1000 barrels.
