The winemaker
The history of Domaine Méo-Camuzet
The birthplace of the Méo family is the Burgundian village of Selongey, in the north of the Côte d'Or. For more than four centuries, winegrowers have passed on their know-how, with an interlude devoted to the study of science.
In the mid-19th century, the great-grandfather of Jean-Nicolas - the current owner - was a schoolteacher, his grandfather a civil engineer and his father Jean, a polytechnician and mining engineer. The latter was later elected to the European Parliament and sat on the Paris Council.
After this interlude, Jean Méo's mother, Marcelle Lamarche-Confuron, brought the family back to winegrowing, thanks to her family's small trading business. It was then that the Méo family settled in Vosne Romanée.
Following a merger with Domaine Camuzet, the estate took the definitive name Méo-Camuzet in 1981. The first vintage to be marketed under this name was 1983. At that time, the estate was run by Jean Méo and his wife Nicole.
Jean Méo and his wife Nicole had 3 children: Isabelle, Angeline and Jean-Nicolas. It was Jean-Nicolas who took over Domaine Méo-Camuzet, after studying business and oenology in Paris and Dijon, as well as in the United States.
Jean-Nicolas is married to Nathalie, with whom he has three children, Adrien, born in 1993, Tristan in 1996 and Séverin in 2000. The next generation of Méo is thus assured.
The Domaine Méo-Camuzet vineyard
The Domaine Méo-Camuzet vineyard covers 18.1 hectares, of which 14.5 hectares are dedicated to red wine and 3.6 hectares to white. The red grape variety is Pinot Noir and the white grape variety is Chardonnay. The average age of the vines is 40 years. Annual production is 70,000 bottles.
Every effort is made in the management of Domaine Méo-Camuzet for reasoned viticulture that respects the environment and biodiversity. Yields are controlled for the benefit of quality, harvesting is manual, as is grape sorting. Vinification is the least interventionist possible to allow the fruit to express itself better, shaping wines of great finesse. The soils are ploughed and the few additives are certified organic.
