The winemaker

The history of Domaine Leroy

The history of Domaine Leroy begins with François Leroy, who built up a vineyard in Burgundy's most prestigious communes: Auxey-Duresses, Meursault, Pommard, Chambertin, Musigny, Clos Vougeot and Richebourg. He founded the company in 1868.

When he inherited the estate, his son Joseph set about developing the business, also becoming a distiller and liqueur-maker. The talented winemaker saw his efforts rewarded, with medals and grand prizes at exhibitions in Brussels in 1897, Dijon in 1898 and La Rochelle in 1911.

When Henry Leroy joined Domaine Leroy in 1919, he created the eaux-de-vie branch in Gensac La Pallue, as well as a distillery in Segonzac, in the heart of the great Champagnes. After his death in 1980, his youngest daughter, Lalou Bize Leroy, took over the business.

The Domaine Leroy vineyard

The Domaine Leroy vineyard enjoys an exceptional reputation in Burgundy. Heir to a long family tradition, Lalou Bize Leroy is a living legend. She was a forerunner in the way she ran the estate, deciding as early as 1988 to cultivate her plots biodynamically. At the time, she was one of the few people working in this sector who understood that preserving the terroir was a guarantee of longevity.

The winemaker opted for low yields, in order to produce wines of the highest quality. Her strategy has paid off, and today many envy the reputation of Domaine Leroy wines.

The vineyard currently covers 22 hectares, 18 of which are planted with red grapes. Of the 9 Grands Crus, 7 are located in Côte de Nuits, and two in Côte de Beaune: Corton Charlemagne and Corton Renardes.
