The winemaker
The history of the estate
While today the Comtes Lafon estate is deeply rooted in the Burgundy region, its origins lie much further south. Jules Joseph Barthélémy Lafon was born in Valence in 1864. After marrying the daughter of an owner-merchant in Meursault, he moved north to become mayor of Meursault in the early 20th century. In 1931, he finally gave up all activity to devote himself entirely to his wine estate.
Since then, generations have succeeded one another at the head of the estate, which has expanded over the years. Since 1984, Dominique Lafon has held the reins of the vineyard. From 1987 onwards, he gradually broke away from sharecropping (9-year leases), taking full control of the 13.8-hectare parcels in 1993.
Today, the vineyard covers 16.3 hectares.
The vineyard
With 16.3 hectares of plots spread over four communes (Chassagne, Monthélie, Meursault and Volnay), the domaine produces 15 appellations.
Depending on the appellation and village, the vines are planted with Chardonnay (Meursault, Montrachet) or Pinot Noir (Volnay, Monthélie).
The vines are 32 years old on average, and are pruned using the Guyot method. The grapes are harvested by hand, sorted in the vineyard and then on the sorting table to ensure that only healthy, ripe grapes are vinified.
The estate has been certified "Agriculture Biologique" since 1995, and biodynamic since 1998. No fertilizers or chemicals are used in the vineyards.
Wines true to terroir
The wines produced by the estate are therefore naturally in line with the terroirs of which they are composed.
Pure and intense, the vineyard's white wines stand out for their elegant body and noble acidity, which adds freshness to the wine's balance.
